Persistent sensory changes and sex differences in transgenic mice conditionally expressing HIV-1 Tat regulatory protein
2022, Experimental NeurologyCitation Excerpt :In support, prior studies of enteric neurons in our model demonstrate Tat's capacity to alter the expression, activation, and inactivation of sodium channel isoforms Nav1.7 and Nav1.8 (Ngwainmbi et al., 2014), which are also expressed in DRG neurons. The DRG may be a critical target for Tat-mediated sensory and nociceptive dysfunction, particularly given its high vascularization and permeable blood-nerve-barrier (Jacobs et al., 1976; Jimenez-Andrade et al., 2008). Elevated Tat mRNA levels are detectable in the skin by digital PCR and in the DRGs by RT-PCR of Tat(+) mice (Wodarski et al., 2018) and are presumed to originate from GFAP-expressing unmyelinated Schwann cells or satellite cells, respectively.

2021, Biomedicine and PharmacotherapyCitation Excerpt :Interestingly, the biodistribution analysis detected a very low PTX concentration in the DRG using large liposomes (i.e. MLV-PEG-PTX) in comparison with smaller liposomes (i.e. SUV-PEG-PTX) and free PTX. The DRG, where the cell bodies of the peripheral sensory neurons are located, have a rich vasculature [28] with EFs, making them particularly sensitive to neurotoxic agents [60]. In fact, PTX levels in the DRG have been previously associated with sensory neurotoxicity [27,61].
