2021, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :Since SNr is the output of BG, we could perhaps expect similar results by lesioning it; however, this possibility would require experimental confirmation. Multiple previous examples in the literature indicate that lesions of different BG and thalamic regions are somehow efficient therapeutic alternatives to ameliorate specific motor symptoms associated with PD (Bergman et al., 1990; Lozano and Lang, 1995; De Bie et al., 2002; Esselink et al., 2004; Fasano et al., 2017). Here, we do not propose lesioning the sensorimotor striatum as a therapeutic alternative for PD, we are only highlighting the paradoxical effects of this procedure in motor control and, particularly, in the rotarod.
