In cats anaesthetized with chloralose we examined the activity in 3 descending tracts. It was possible to show a correlation between the chloralose jerk response into the posterior biceps and semitendinosus (PBST) nerve and the impulse discharge in 2 of the 3 tracts,i.e., in the corticospinal tract and the reticulospinal tract. In the third tract, the rubrospinal, there was little early activity in these fibres compared to the late firing about 200 msec later. Since the chloralose jerk may still be recorded after section of the pyramids we concluded that the corticospinal fibres may contribute to the chloralose jerk, but are not essential, whereas the reticulospinal formed a basic loop in this ‘multilayered’ reflex.
