Abstract

The authors present an unusual case of a pituitary adenoma that developed into intracranial and intraspinal dissemination following intracranial surgery with adjunctive radiation, and review metastasis of pituitary adenomas in the central nervous system briefly in light of other reported cases.

One case of cerebrospinal fluid dissemination was described after a transsphenoidal surgery for a pituitary adenoma [38] and another case was about a growth hormone-producing pituitary carcinoma with spinal metastases following multiple surgeries [39]. Leptomeningeal spread of pituitary adenoma has been widely reported in patients who underwent craniotomies before the era of mini-invasive endoscopic transsphenoidal approach [40–42]. There is no standardized treatment for pituitary metastases, and different approaches have been described, including surgical resection, radiosurgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
