Most such animals were subsequently found to have ischaemic neuronal alterations within the territory of the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery. In contrast, impaired reperfusion ('no-reflow') rarely occurred and cannot therefore be implicated in the pathogenesis of ischaemic brain damage.
