Clinical and pharmacological studies confirmed that the abnormalities were restricted mainly to the postganglionic cholinergic autonomic systems. The titre of serum complement was low, antinuclear antibodies revealed a diffuse pattern, and anti SS-A antibody was positive, suggesting that this disorder was caused by an immune mechanism.
