Selection criteria for using intrathecal phenol

1Severe lower limb spasticity effecting comfort, function and/or care.
2Maximum doses of oral medication have been tried without therapeutic effect.
3Therapy and nursing intervention no longer able to sustain effective management.
4Other treatment options such, as botulinum toxin, intrathecal baclofen considered not suitable.
5Bladder and bowel dysfunction evident and effective management strategies in place.
6Individuals are aware of potential effect on lower limb sensation and sexual function.
7Responsive to trial of intrathecal local anaesthetic
8Individuals and carer aware of nature of treatment, potential side effects, and agree with the goal of treatment.
