Table 4

Predictors of disability progression in the postpartum year

Crude HR (95% CI; p value)Adjusted HR (95% CI; p value) in time- dependent analysis
Relapses in the year prior to pregnancy1.6 (1.1 to 2.1; 0.006)1.4 (1.1 to 1.9; 0.047)
Relapses in the year after delivery3.1 (1.6 to 5.8; 0.001)2.7 (1.4 to 5.2; 0.002)
  • Variables included in the model: current age, disease duration and EDSS at conception (<2.0 vs ≥2.0), DMDs before pregnancy, number of relapses in the year before pregnancy, during pregnancy and after delivery, smoking, alcohol and toxin exposure during pregnancy (yes vs no), breast feeding (yes vs no) and DMD introduction after delivery (early vs delayed) (time-dependent covariate: early DMD value is 0 until drug introduction and changes to 1 thereafter. For delayed DMD, the value remains 0 in the follow-up).

  • DMDs, disease modifying drugs; EDSS, Expanded Disability Status Scale.
