The number of air travellers continues to steadily rise. The commercial airline industry will transport approximately 1 billion US passengers in the year 2011 alone.1 With that increase in both the number of travellers on planes, the ageing population as a whole and the sheer volume of individuals who may have a medical condition, it is not surprising that in-flight medical emergencies are relatively commonplace.
