Initial studies on the safety of this procedure reported encouraging results, including patient tolerance of the transplantation procedure and the administration of immunosuppressant drugs to avoid rejection of the transplant (Kopyov et al., 1998). Remarkably, three of the five tested HD patients showed a beneficial effect of a bilateral neurograft on motor and cognitive functions one year after the last transplantation (Bachoud-Levi et al., 2000b).
