Nontraditional Aspects of Sporadic Primary Hyperparathyroidism
2021, Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Observational studies and 1 small randomized controlled trial have investigated cognition.90,95,100–105,109,111 Although many, but not all, suggest memory to be affected and improvement in memory or other cognitive domains after PTX, the lack of longitudinal surgical or nonsurgical controls in many studies makes attribution of improvement to cure of PHPT difficult.90,95,100,102–105,111–114 Improvement in noncontrolled studies may be due to learning or placebo effects of surgery.115

2014, NeuroToxicologyCitation Excerpt :Behavioral abnormalities such as restlessness during HD sessions, needle removal accidents, non-compliance with drug regimens, and difficulty with dietary restrictions are all critical issues seen in elderly dialysis patients with dementia. Cerebrovascular disease, anemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism, dialysis disequilibrium, and uremic toxins (UTs) have been reported as major causes of CI accompanied by CKD (Beard et al., 1997; Brines et al., 2000; Cerami et al., 2001; Chou et al., 2008; Cogan et al., 1978; Drueke et al., 2006; Erbayraktar et al., 2003; Goldstein et al., 1980; Goldstein and Massry, 1980; Guisado et al., 1975; Lee et al., 2004; Leist et al., 2004; Pfeffer et al., 2009; Pickett et al., 1999; Rabie and Marti, 2008; Seliger et al., 2005; Shah et al., 2006; Singh et al., 2006; Temple et al., 1992; Zhang et al., 2009). Uremia can be defined as biochemical and physiologic dysfunction that increases with progression of CKD, resulting in variable symptomatology (Vanholder and De Smet, 1999).
