2018, Psychiatry ResearchCitation Excerpt :The prevalence of somatoform disorder in the general population is about 6% (Wittchen et al., 2011). Psychological or multidisciplinary treatment has been proposed as the preferred treatment option for somatoform disorder, given the medically untreatable nature of the physical symptoms, and the disturbed behavioral, cognitive and emotional processes (Bass and Murphy, 1995; Kroenke, 2007). Meta-analyses have indicated that psychological treatment is beneficial for patients with somatoform disorder but that there is ample room for improvement of effects (Kroenke, 2007; Abbas et al., 2009; Kleinstäuber et al., 2011; Koelen et al., 2014).

2016, European PsychiatryCitation Excerpt :Personality dysfunction has been hypothesized to be the most clinically salient problem of patients with a somatoform disorder. The largest study on comorbidity rates hitherto showed that 50.6% of patients suffering from MUS or somatoform disorders has a comorbid personality disorder when assessed systematically with the SCID-II [6]. Smaller studies that have assessed systematically comorbidity rates with personality disorders have reported even higher rates, i.e. 48.0% [7], 60.6% [8], 62.9% [9], and 72.0% [10].
Harm avoidance and persistence are associated with somatoform disorder psychopathology: A study in Taiwan
2016, Journal of Affective DisordersCitation Excerpt :Somatoform disorders are psychiatric disorders with presentations of somatic symptoms (Grover and Ghosh, 2014), including somatic distress and excessive worry about illness (Kirmayer and Robbins, 1991). Being comorbid with anxiety, depressive, or personality disorders is common in somatoform patients (Bass and Murphy, 1995; Li et al., 2009; Mergl et al., 2007). A comprehensive understanding of the patient's background will be beneficial for making treatment plans (Kirmayer et al., 1994; Kroenke, 2007).
