    The presence of malarial retinopathy was the only clinical feature to distinguish patients with typical histopathological features of cerebral malaria from those with other illnesses. Lumbar puncture must be done to exclude other causes for encephalopathy, although there are differences of opinion about the timing of this procedure.16,65 There may be mild pleocytosis and high protein concentrations.66
