Brain Death and Ethical Issues in Neuroanesthesia Practice
2017, Essentials of NeuroanesthesiaBrainstem auditory evoked responses
2013, Handbook of Clinical NeurophysiologyCitation Excerpt :These studies from multiple sources show that the early hopes were not met and lead to the conclusion that it is unwise to prognosticate coma outcome on the basis of BAEP findings. BAEPs were also recorded in brain death (Starr, 1976; Goldie et al., 1981; Lumenta et al., 1989; Shiogai et al., 1989; Machado et al., 1991). Three abnormalities have been reported: (1) total absence of all waves, (2) preservation of wave I and absence of all other waves, (3) preservation of waves I and II with absence of any other BAEP components.
Brain death
2006, Seminars in Anesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and PainCitation Excerpt :Other ancillary tests that have been explored include somatosensory evoked potentials, CT angiography, and magnetic resonance angiography. Somatosensory evoked potentials have been drawn into question based on a relatively poor predictive value,23 and cannot be used as a confirmatory test with primary infratentorial lesions, as these may cause an absence of cortical signal due to a structural abnormality. These angiographic techniques have not yet been validated but show promise in small clinical studies.24
