Alteration of the blood-brain barrier system by hypothermia: critical time period vs. critical temperature

Abstract

  • 1.

    1. Rats were made hypothermic and were maintained at 16–18, 18–20 or 21–24°C until 1 hr had elapsed from the time at which a temperature of 24°C had been reached.

  • 2.

    2. They were then injected with 86RbCl and sacrificed. Brains were removed and counted for radioactivity.

  • 3.

    3. Brains from the coldest group showed considerably more radioactivity than those from the warmer groups.

  • 4.

    4. It was concluded that permeability of the rat brain to this tracer is determined more by a critical low temperature than by a critical time period in hypothermia.
